In this lecture of Surveying–1, we will study the Procedure of Chain Surveying, which explains the systematic steps followed in conducting a survey using the chain surveying method. This lecture is important because it introduces the practical field procedures that surveyors follow to collect accurate measurements and record survey data.

The lecture will focus on understanding:
The concept of reconnaissance surveying, which involves a preliminary inspection of the survey area to understand the terrain and plan the survey work.
The step-by-step procedure of chain surveying, including planning, measurement, and recording of field data.
Important considerations for selecting station points, ensuring that stations are visible, accessible, and suitable for accurate measurement.
The procedure of ranging a survey line, which is the process of establishing a straight line between two survey stations.
The method of measuring linear distances using chains and tapes during field surveying.
You will also learn the booking procedure of a field book, which is the systematic method of recording measurements, offsets, and observations during the survey. Proper field book recording is essential because it ensures that all collected data can be accurately used later for plotting and map preparation.
In addition, the lecture will introduce the single-line field book and double-line field book, explaining their structure and how they are used for recording survey data clearly and efficiently.
By the end of this lecture, you should be able to describe the complete procedure of chain surveying, understand how survey lines are ranged and measured, and explain how field observations are properly recorded in a field book.
Students are encouraged to carefully review the lecture materials and practice understanding field procedures to develop a strong practical foundation in surveying techniques.
Best wishes for your continued learning in Surveying–1.
