Transportation Engineering -2

1. Subject Details: Transportation engineering is a branch of civil engineering that involves the planning, design, operation and maintenance of transportation. Construction of railway roads, railway station and seaport is the major areas of transportation in which a diploma in Civil Engineer may get very good opportunities for employment. The primary objective of railway engineering branch is to provide efficient, safe, cost-effective and environmentally sustainable mobility services. Diploma in Civil Engineer are responsible for construction and maintenance of highways, railway and sea port. Basic concepts of road geometric surveys, plans, elements of engineering, road materials, construction of railway road, sea port and various aspects of maintenance find place in above course. In addition, this subject will cater the needs of those who would like to find employment in the construction of railway tracks and seaport. The subject covers broad based knowledge regarding various components and construction of Railway, Rail fastening, Sleeper, Ballast, Creep, Station, yard, Points and crossing, Signaling, Maintenance of railway, History of railway, Railway surveys, railway track and sea port.

Learning Outcome ( Theoretical): After undergoing the subject, students will be able to
1. Interpret modes of transportation, History of railway and railway surveys.
2. Illustrate principles of the permanent way.
3. Explain rail fastening.
4. Elucidate characteristics of Sleeper in permanent way.
5. Describe Ballast in permanent way.
6. Interpret station and yard.
7. Evaluate Points and crossing in railway.
8. Explain mechanism of signaling in railway.
9. Describe maintenance work in railway.
10. Analyze sea port.
11. Illustrate Mass Rapid Transit System.

Learning Outcome (Practical ):After undergoing the subject, students will be able to

1. Draw the section of a permanent way showing the components.
2. Sketch and prepare a model of double headed rail, bull headed rail and flat footed rail with measurements.
3. Draw the narrow gauge, meter gauge, broad gauge and dual gauge used in Bangladesh showing the measurements.
4. Draw the fish plate, bearing plate, dog spike, screw spike, round spike and elastic spike with measurements.
5. Sketch different types of sleepers used in Bangladesh.
6. Sketch wayside station, yard, junction and terminals showing platform and other components.
7. Draw the main track and side track of a double line railway station.
